Private jets' incredible interiors

Washington DC-based photographer Nick Gleis has photographed over 800 private jets - ranging from the Lear 20 series to Boeing 747-400s - in a career that has lasted over 30 years. His vast collection of photographs gives rare insight into the exclusive world and tastes of private jet owners; many of the aircraft photographed by Gleis are owned by royalty and heads of state from countries such as Japan, Saudi Arabia, China, Dubai and Kazakhstan. Here he shares pictures of some of the most lavish private jets he has photographed and explains what his unusual career entails.

For a marriage that endures, bite your tongue

Arguments over who does the washing up or mows the lawn are less likely to occur between seasoned spouses who have learned the art of conflict avoidance.

A study of 127 middle-aged and older couples found that over time they grew less willing to risk having explosive rows.

Instead, they became more likely to adopt strategies such as changing the subject or keeping silent.

Such behaviour is normally seen as damaging to relationships because it leads to bottled up anger and resentment.

But for older couples, who have had decades to voice their disagreements, it might offer a way to keep the peace, psychologists have said.

Scientists monitored the progress of the married couples over 13 years and filmed 15 minute discussions between them, noting how they communicated.

In particular, the researchers were looking for evidence of "demand-withdraw" conversation patterns. This occurs when one person in a relationship is blamed or pressured by the other and responds by withdrawing or trying to avoid the issue.

Over the years, both husbands and wives increasingly demonstrated avoidance during conflict, said the researchers.

"It may be that both age and marital duration play a role in increased avoidance,” said lead author Dr Sarah Holley, from San Francisco State University.

Pet miles reward frequent fliers

Dogs and cats that travel on a Virgin Australia domestic flight can now collect points for their owners that can then be used to obtain discounts on future flights.

The animals travel in hold, as usual, but with the benefit of earning participating Virgin Australia club members a minimum of 300 points.

“Virgin Australia flies almost 30,000 pets each year around Australia,” said Neil Thompson, chief of Virgin Australia’s Velocity club, “and a large proportion are owned by Velocity members.”

This is Australia’s first frequent flier programme for pets, but similar schemes are already available on other long-haul flights.

Virgin Atlantic launched its Flying Paws scheme in 2005 which entitles each canine and feline passenger to a welcome onboard pet pack. Dogs receive a Virgin Atlantic t-shirt and a sparkly dog tag, while cats have a toy mouse to play with and a collar tag. Each will also receive a pet passport with a record of their flights and points which they can redeem for gifts such as dog bowls or bonus miles for their owner.

Loyalty schemes for animals are just the latest example of a movement towards catering for pets within the travel industry.

Earlier this month a luxury holiday for dogs was launched, by canine hotel the Paw Seasons, costing £47,000.

Treats offered during the dogs-only fortnight break included walkies led by a Commonwealth hurdler and snacks selected by a personal chef.

A “love motel” for pets in Brazil, complete with chocolate dog biscuits, heart-shaped mirrors and, for the under-whelmed, assisted reproduction services, opened for dogs last year. It is part of Animalle Mundo Pet, a large pet complex in Belo Horizonte.

In Britain, Best Western and Travelodge both offer customised beds for dogs and cats that don’t like to leave their owners’ side.

Trapped pigeons rescued by three emergency vehicles

The pigeons had become tangled in netting on top of a shop roof and sparked a nine person rescue in Spennymoor.

Animal charity, the RSPCA, was first to the scene after being contacted by a concerned member of public on Monday afternoon.

When they were unable to access the shop roof, they called for assistance from the local fire service.

A fire engine was dispatched, but firemen decided to send another soon after so specialist equipment could be used to aid the birds.

The two fire engines blocked the road as they tried to rescue the birds, forcing a police car to help control the traffic building up on the high street.

All three pigeons were eventually rescued by the firemen who used their bare hands and canvas bags to bring the birds to safety.

Local residents questioned the emergency services’ decision to send so many people to the scene.

Jeweller John Welsh, 63, told the Daily Mail: “I was shocked. At first I thought that there was a major fire.

“Two fire engines and a police car? For three pigeons? I am an animal lover to a certain degree, but pigeons are actually classed as vermin. Would you rescue a rat?”

Neil Savage said: “It was disgraceful for three pigeons. The bus timetables were disrupted and the RSPCA were attending. It must have cost a fortune.”

A spokesman for County Durham and Darlington Fire Service claimed the crews responded to stop members of the public trying to rescue the birds themselves.

The RSPCA confirmed that the pigeons were all uninjured and immediately released.

The world's biggest building opens in China

Seemingly locked in a battle for superlative supremacy, China and Dubai continue to construct a dizzying number of record-breaking attractions. Home to Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building, Dubai has this year inaugurated the world’s biggest natural flower garden, the world’s tallest hotel and the world’s tallest twisted tower. China, meanwhile, is preparing to open a ‘groundscraper’ cave hotel that will burrow 19 storeys below the ground, and it has now opened the world’s largest freestanding building in Chengdu.

Named New Century Global Center, the colossal structure is 500 metres long, 400 metres wide and 100 metres high, and contains a total floor space of 1.7million square metres. Providing a sense of scale, the Sydney Morning Herald reports that the building is large enough to accommodate the Sydney Opera House 20 times over.

Visitors to the attraction may find it somewhat less highbrow than Australia’s famed cultural attraction, however. The building will house cinemas, shopping centres, office space, hotels, conference centres, a water theme park with artificial beach and various other attractions including a replica Mediterranean village.

In south-western China, Chengdu is the capital of Sichuan province and home to 14million people. One of the country’s largest and most populous cities, it is currently undergoing an intense phase of development with plans in place to extend its underground network by 183 kilometres by 2020. The ongoing development of a ‘Software Park’ within Chengdu forms part of the city’s efforts to create a local ‘Silicon Valley’. Some 29,000 companies are currently based in Chengdu’s 130-square-kilometre “hi-tech development zone”.

Given the speed and ambition of development locally, New Century Global Center may not be Chengdu’s most significant structure for long. Residents and visitors will have good reason to visit the building for years to come, however. Chengdu’s rapid development has meant the city is regularly blanketed by smog. New Century Global Center includes an artificial sun that will shine and emanate heat for 24 hours each day, and a giant 150-metre-long screen will project an artificial horizon and display sunrises and sunsets as the days pass.

Lottery winner carries on as normal, 16 years after £12m jackpot

David Ashcroft’s neighbour has made the remark 16 years after the 46-year-old took home his £12.3 million jackpot, and it does not seem wide of the mark.

Mr Ashcroft vowed that his winnings would not change his life, and he has remained true to his word.

While many would have quit their job and moved into a mansion, he is still working as a furniture restorer and sharing a terraced home with his elderly parents, Roy, 76, and Jean, 74.

The only sign he has splashed out on improving the family home in Liverpool is new double glazing.

He has also bought a caravan in North Wales and a 4x4 Mitsubishi, which is thought to have been for his parents.

While some might have made the kind of shrewd investments that could have doubled their winnings, Mr Ashcroft acquired a property portfolio worth less than £250,000, according to records at Companies House.

Personalised number plates for his father’s van and a Ferrari, which he gave to a relative, are perhaps the only real luxuries he has permitted himself to spend on.

His mother says he has “not gone anywhere” and it is unclear whether he has formed a romantic relationship since his win, having said he was single when he pocketed his millions.

When Mr Ashcroft won his jackpot in 1997, he said: "I am an ordinary, quiet introvert. This may change me. I hope not."

It appears he had nothing to worry about.

Passers-by still see him tidying up outside his workshop in a suburban garage near his home, dressed jeans and checked shirt.

His neighbour told the Daily Mail: “Most people would have used a fortune like that to fulfil all their dreams, but evidently David’s perfectly happy as he is.”

Czech woman 'walks off' after falling under train

The young woman - who appeared to be dozing on her feet - fell off the platform on Monday into a deep groove between the subway rails, saving her from the impact of the undercarriage zooming by overhead.

She reportedly refused both medical treatment and a breathalyser test, telling police she was "merely tired".

Tesco sells Psycho-themed colouring book for five-year olds

The 16-page colouring book, on sale at Tesco stores, featured pictures of blood, knives and screaming victims including a scene from Psycho.

It was marketed at children aged five to eight but featured images from horror films with 18+ ratings.

The book, entitled "Colour Me Good - Arrggghhhh!!", includes images from classic horror films including Fatal Attraction, Psycho, Misery, Hellraiser, The Shining, and The Silence of the Lambs.

Grandfather Chris Tuckwood, 56, of Spondon, Derby, came across the colouring book when he was searching for a birthday present for his seven-year-old grandson, Reece.

He said: "It was advertised as being suitable for kids from five to eight. I don't think so.

"It is unbelievable that they can sell such a thing aimed at kids. I don't think I have to say why it's unsuitable, that much is obvious. Who on earth are they employing that thinks this is okay?"

The blurb on the back cover says the book contains "really scary stuff" and "more blood than you can shake a dagger at".

A Tesco spokesman said the product was placed on the company's website by the book's publisher.

He said: "We have very clear guidelines for third-party sellers who list items on our website, and are sorry that on this occasion they weren't followed.

"We will be speaking with the seller to remind them of the importance of selecting the right category when listing products with us.

"Of course when issues do arise we act quickly with the seller to ensure that the item is updated with the correct information."

The book's publisher, I Love Mel, insisted the product is aimed at adults - despite the blurb saying it is aimed at "beginners" as well as "good colourer-inners".

Mel Elliott, who runs I Love Mel, said: "Firstly, and most importantly, my products are not aimed at kids. They are a contemporary, pop-culture inspired range that are aimed at playful grown-ups.

"I was unaware that Tesco were a stockist as a separate distribution company deal with wholesale of my products.

"The front cover of 'Colour Me Good Arrggghhhh!!' features a drawing from the horror movie, 'Psycho' in which a woman is stabbed to death in the shower.

"I believe that this one image is a fairly large clue that this is not a book aimed at children.

"However, it does state on Tesco's website that my products are aimed at five to eight year olds, which is an error on their part."

The product has now been removed from Tesco's website.

Top 40 signs of a midlife crisis revealed

The term mid-life crisis was first coined in 1965 where early analysis suggested that it could happen anywhere between the ages of 40 and 60, but it is now shown to start much earlier.

Saved Game Not Showing In-Game?

So, in April of this year I finally bought and downloaded all episodes of The Walking Dead and beat them over a course of a few days. A little while after that, I got a new PS3 and transferred all of my save data over to it. Just a short while ago tonight, I bought and downloaded the 400 Days DLC.

On this new PS3, I clearly have the save data from my playthrough of the Walking Dead (although I can't find the game data, but I don't know if this is the source of my issue?).

However, when I start the game up, it doesn't give me the option of 'resuming' my game: when I choose 'play', all of the episodes are there and downloaded (including the DLC), but when I try to play the DLC or any of the episodes, it asks if I would like to generate random choices for episodes skipped.

Why does my save data show up on my PS3, but not in-game? I shouldn't need to replay TWD just because I'm on a different system, now, and I really don't want to generate my choices before I play 400 Days. Is there any way this can be fixed? Does it have something to do with the missing game data? Please help!

We need a Choice Comic/DLC like in Mass Effect: Genesis

I'm sure many of you know of the save problems this game was plagued with for many users.

I myself didn't have my choices carried over throughout Season 1 which was disappointing.

Now what would be nice is if we could get a Comic like Mass effect, that quickly runs through the back story of all the important choices, and lets you select what you want, to generate a save file that we can use.

Honestly, i feel like this should have been implemented for this DLC release, but at the very least we need something for Season 2 (it would have to include the DLC choices too though)

Can we get some word from TellTale about this? I really don't think it's worth playing the game with random choices selected for me.

Yeah exactly the same!

Still says "coming soon" and on the screen with episode lists all the other 5 say "installed" yet 400 days says "buy: out now" :S

I'm also on PS3,

I must have re downloaded it about 6 times, tried one by one, both downloads and nothing, still won't recognise.

Hopefully someone knows how to fix this!

Bonnie has no idea who Nate nor anyone at the station was.Sorry, not Bonnie, I meant Shel. I got my names crossed. At the beginning of Shel's story you can look at the blood stains from where Nate shot the couple and Shel says that the stains were already there when Roman found the place.

And I just played Russell's section again. There's no time jump - at least not a matter of days. They drive off during sunset and it picks up again once it's dark. Russell is still mad about when Nate opened the window and scared him with the walker and he's still got Nate's gun in his lap. It's the same day.

Do you have ps plus and cloud saves enabled? No I don't have ps plus or use cloud saves. It has been a while since I last played the game. I think this happened before when I downloaded episode 3. It was acting like I never played episode 2. I think what I did before was use the rewind option to play the last scene from episode 1 and then everything seemed to sort itself out. I tried to do this now and it does not seem to help. I don't wanna have to replay episodes 3-5 just to experience the dlc. The choices are important and there is no way if I played now that I would do things exactly as I did when I played them last year. I also want my choices to carry over to episode 2 this fall.

My brother has a save file in slot 2. Is that causing a problem. I don't see why having another save in slot 2 should mess up my save in slot 1.

Also I just noticed that for some reason when I scroll to episode 1 there is no option for me to hit triangle to see my stats for that episode even though I completed it. That maybe why my save is acting up. I still don't understand why this seems to happen every time there is a new dlc released.

Are saves transferrable between Steam and Telltale versions?

I believe saves are shared. I bought the game from Telltale and mostly played from Steam when they gave out steam keys to people who pre-ordered, but when I played Episode 4 from the Store version the saves were still there.

However, where did you hear that the Telltale store version gets 400 days for free? I've read various users saying that but I haven't heard that from Telltale yet. Is that true? EDIT: Nevermind, they confirmed the free version in the 400 Days thread. Woohoo!

was i supposed to get steam code?

Default The Telltale store was unable to release Episode 1 on it's original release date, finally, late that evening, when it was apparent the Telltale store was not going to get the game out, they sent out emails to all the pre-orders with a Steam code. Not sure how you'd go about getting that now.

New Super Smash Bros. reveal video coming June 11

Nintendo will show a video of its new Super Smash Bros. game next Tuesday, June 11 as part of its Nintendo Direct broadcast.

Zoom

Creator Masahiro Sakurai took to Twitter to confirm the news today. He said (via Google translation): "In Nintendo Direct delivery of 23:00, June 11, New video of "Smash Bros." will be unveiled for the first time. Simultaneous world, here for the first time! Do not miss." You can watch it from 3pm UK time.

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata recently said Nintendo would use its E3 webcast to discuss "new Smash Bros., 3D Mario game, Mario Kart and other Wii U titles".

Sakurai is serving as producer on the new Smash Bros. game, which is a Wii U/3DS crossover in development at Namco Bandai

Official Nintendo Magazine associate editor Matthew Castle recently labelled the title his most anticipated game of E3, writing:

"Sakurai says he wants the 3DS version to be a more personalised, individual experience that feeds into a competitive public space on Wii U, and that would certainly play to the strengths of both systems.

"He's also tidying up online play - great news for those us that spent months of our lives hanging out in Brawl's notoriously flaky pre-match lobby.

"I'm more concerned about how much of the game we'll actually see. Every promise Iwata makes about showing the game at E3 is met with a cautious 'wait and see' from Sakurai."

PSN a 'substantial business opportunity for Sony Pictures', says House

PlayStation Network presents a "substantial business opportunity" for other part of Sony's business, according to president and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment Andrew House.

Zoom Breaking Bad is co-produced by Sony Pictures Television

Speaking in an interview with The Guardian, House specifically cited Sony Pictures as an arm of the company that stands to gain from the 110 million account audience PSN has built.

"It was important that he was on stage," House said, referring to the appearance of Sony Pictures Entertainment CEO Michael Lynton on stage during its E3 press conference.

"It's a testament to how far we've come with PlayStation 3 in building a really substantial community of networked gamers, who are also interested in other forms of entertainment.

"Whereas I think you could have slightly accused Sony of a bit of forced synergy, if we'd been trying to enact this collaboration several years ago, the fact is now, with 110 million PlayStation Network accounts worldwide, that's a substantial business opportunity for Sony Pictures to reach a different audience."

House also spoke of efforts to develop original content distributed through PSN, and provide specific benefits of being a PSN customer.

"So [Lynton] was talking about two things. One is significant interest and work which is already under way to develop original TV-style programming content, which could be made available with some form of exclusivity to people on the PSN - essentially using PSN as a distribution network.

"The second point was to find ways to give earlier or exclusive access to other forms of content that Sony Pictures has - again, for people who are on PSN and particularly for members of PlayStation Plus."

Zoom

Sony Pictures produces and distributes a number of popular movies and TV shows, including breakaway successes such as Breaking Bad, of which the final season is scheduled to air from August 11.

According to House, the library of content Sony has access to is what could differentiate PlayStation from its competitors.

"Where that starts to come together is that once you have a large, global network of consumers, then having access to entertainment content assets can enhance the services that you're providing, differentiate you from the competition and provide consumers with something new and potentially exclusive.

"That makes our entertainment businesses even more important to Sony's overall strategy than perhaps they had been in the past."

Sony has announced a holiday 2013 PS4 release date.

PlayStation Network maintenance this Tuesday

PlayStation Network maintenance has been scheduled for this Tuesday June 25.

Zoom

Sony says the "routine" maintenance will run from approximately 5.30pm BST / 6.30pm CET until around midnight BST / 1.00am CET.

The PlayStation Store, PlayStation Home and Account Management will be unavailable during the maintenance period.

Users may receive a maintenance notification when attempting to access PSN, but will be able to access online play and apps provided they've signed in prior to the beginning of the maintenance period.

Last week, Sony released and subsequently pulled PS3 firmware update 4.45 after it was found to be causing errors in what the platform holder termed a "small number" of consoles.

It later said: "A new PS3 system software update is planned to be released on June 27 that resolves the issue. Thank you for your patience and understanding and we apologise for the inconvenience."

Firmware update 4.45 was designed to allow users to switch trophy notifications off via the System Settings menu and improve general performance.

Sony has applied for certification of two new PS3 models, suggesting revised versions of its current-gen console are in the works.

The company recently said it has no current plans to introduce a PS3 price cut, despite the fact that PS4 will be available this Christmas.

UK Chart: Grid 2 enters at No.1

Grid 2 entered at No.1 on the UK all formats all prices chart for the week ended June 1.

Codemasters' racing sequel went one better than its predecessor, which debuted at No.2 five years ago, although launch week sales were down 29 per cent on the original's, according to Chart-Track.

Zoom

FIFA 13 was a non-mover at No.2, ahead of fellow former chart-toppers Dead Island: Riptide, Far Cry 3 and Resident Evil: Revelations.

Assassin's Creed 3 remained at No.6, while Metro Last Light, Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D, Lego Batman 2: DC Super Heroes and Tomb Raider rounded off the top ten.

The only other new entry in the top 40 was Insomniac's first multiplatform game, EA published Fuse, which debuted at a lowly No.37.

We said in our Grid 2 review: "Grid 2 is a robust and complete racing package that delivers big on value-for-money and while it's by no means a game of end-to-end thrills, it has its moments. Those that splash out will have their investment repaid in kind, once they get to grips with its foibles."

In our Fuse review, we said: "Fuse is like four dull cover-shooters transposed on top of each other. Juicily inventive firearms aside, there's a lack of ideas here, and while nothing's particularly wrong, there's certainly not much right."

UK Chart: The Last of Us holds top spot

The Last of Us retained the top spot on the UK all formats all prices chart for the week ended June 22.

Zoom

Chart Track said second week sales of the PS3 exclusive, which enjoyed the biggest launch for a new IP since 2011's LA Noire, fell 48 per cent.

3DS exclusive Animal Crossing: New Leaf was also a non-mover at No.2, followed of FIFA 13, Tomb Raider and Max Payne 3, which saw a 602 per cent jump in weekly sales following massive price promotions.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 jumped eight places to No.6, while Far Cry 3, Injustice: Gods Among Us, Assassin's Creed 3 and Grid 2 rounded off the top ten.

The week's highest charting new release was MotoGP 13 at No.15.

GfK/Chart-Track Top 10 (previous week):

We said in our The Last of Us review: "The Last of Us is a remarkable achievement, and one of those rare games that you never want to end as you approach the finale. It tells a moving story that will linger in your mind long after the credits have rolled, but never loses sight of the fact that it's a video game, not a film. It's a masterful marriage of storytelling and game design, and easily Naughty Dog's finest moment."

Former No.1 Dead Island: Riptide slipped two positions to No.4, while 3DS exclusive Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D was the week's second-highest new entry at No.5.

The only other new release to make the top 40 was Activision's movie tie-in Fast & Furious: Showdown, which debuted at No.14.

GfK/Chart-Track Top 10 (previous week):

We said in our Resident Evil Revelations HD review: "One of the 3DS' leading lights shines all the brighter for its transition to the big screen. A dark, brooding nautical horror story, laced with great set pieces and one hell of a twist."

Tokyo Jungle 'coming to PlayStation Mobile'

PlayStation C.A.M.P.'s Tokyo Jungle is coming to PlayStation Mobile devices, according to the latest issue of Famitsu Magazine.

The report, translated by Silconera, reports that it won't be the same version of the quirky side-scrolling animal survival game available on PlayStation 3. Instead, it is a custom mobile edition with a top-down perspective.

The site says the PlayStation Mobile version of Tokyo Jungle is scheduled for release on July 10 and will be priced at 300 yen ($3) at launch. The price will increase to 600 yen ($6) shortly after launch.

PlayStation Mobile titles can be played on a number of Android devices and the PS Vita.

In our Tokyo Jungle review we said "the graphics are PS2.5-quality, the textures chunky, the animation jerky, the resolution low, the HUD busy" but it is a "fun, funny, totally unique experience with old-school appeal and dozens of hours of gameplay".
